Are hair extensions right for you? Real human hair extensions do make styling your hair a whole lot easier. But they require maintenance and care on a daily basis. In this post we will cover caring for tape in hair extensions in detail. It is important that if you are investing money, you invest in the best quality tape extensions and high quality products for the extensions.
Washing your extensions
The most important thing you must do when you have tape-ins is wash them thoroughly and carefully. This includes the kind of products you need to use and the technique you use to wash.
It is extremely important that you use a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner if you are using real human hair extensions and especially if you are using tape extensions. Shampoos or conditioners that contain sulfates are very harsh on the scalp and strip the hair of natural oils. Since hair extensions are not your own hair, they don’t get the natural oil produced from your scalp. By using the wrong products you will only dry them out, reduce their life and make them unmanageable.
Washing tape extensions is different from washing your own hair. It takes a bit longer, but you need not do it often. Firstly, apply shampoo wherever you can. Then life the bonds, make sure they are properly wet and then gently massage the shampoo in between the layers. Rinse the shampoo the same way you applied, by lifting every layer. Conditioner needs to be applied from the mid- shaft down only. Then, thoroughly rinse.
Be sure to spray a detangler and then comb the hair. Then wait for about 30 minutes to blow dry your hair. Always make sure to dry your tape in human hair extensions to avoid any build up.
Dos and Don’ts
The following are a number of dos and don’ts for tape-in extensions.
Use a heat protectant spray before you style your hair.
Brush the extensions gently several times a day with an extension brush, so it won’t catch on your bonds.
Braid or tie you hair in a ponytail before you sleep so that it doesn’t tangle.
Make sure to dry your hair always after you wash it, or use a dry shampoo on days you can’t
Visit the hair extensions salon every 8 to 10 weeks to have them re-adjusted.
Sleep with wet extensions as it can damage them.
Use the regular brush to detangle wet extensions.
Use products that contain oil, such as argan oil, near the roots as this can loosen the bond.
Let any product build-up, between the layers. Make sure to wash it.
